How to delete your account
- Sign in and open Settings.
- Scroll to Delete account at the bottom.
- Tell us why you are leaving — it is one tap, and it is the only feedback we get.
- Type DELETE to confirm.
If you cannot sign in — you have lost access to your email, for example — write to [support email not configured yet] from the address on the account and we will handle it.
What happens immediately
- Your profile is anonymised: name, bio, gender, date of birth, college, occupation, height, city, area and location are all cleared.
- Your photos are deleted from storage.
- Your interests and your likes are deleted.
- Every active match ends, so your conversations close and nobody can message you.
- Your profile disappears from Discover and can no longer be opened by anyone.
- You are signed out everywhere and cannot sign in again.
What happens to messages
Messages you sent are no longer reachable through the app once the match is ended, and they are attributed to an anonymised account. They are removed permanently when the underlying account record is purged, or 90 days after deletion for messages that were already deleted.
What happens next
After a retention window, a scheduled job hard-deletes the underlying account record, and everything that cascades from it goes with it. For this deployment the window is 30 days by default, set by the operator. Until the job runs, the anonymised record still exists — that is what makes deletion reversible in the case of a mistake or a compromised account, and it is why we do not claim your data is gone the second you tap the button.
What we keep, and why
- Reports about your account are kept for a year after they are closed, so a pattern of behaviour cannot be erased by signing up again.
- Audit logs of staff and security actions are kept for two years. They record what a moderator did, not the content of your conversations.
- Your deletion feedback is kept as anonymous product feedback, stored separately and not linked back to you.
- Backups and system logs may still contain your data until they age out on their own schedule. We cannot selectively erase a single account from a backup, so we do not promise to.
This cannot be undone from the app
Once you confirm, there is no self-service way back. If you only want a break, hide your profile from Discover in Settings instead — it keeps your account and your matches intact.
Your other options
- Hide your profile — nobody new can find you, and your existing matches keep working.
- Leave location-based discovery — stay on BuzzUp without a distance attached to you.
- Turn notifications off — per channel and per event type.
Requesting a copy of your data
Ask before you delete, not after: once your profile is anonymised there is nothing left to export. Write to [support email not configured yet] from the address on your account.
Full detail on retention is in the Privacy Policy.
